Began the hike at 5pm and walked across the bajada, reaching Butterfield pass around 8:30pm. Realized then that I had left my tent stakes with my tarp at home, and would need to improvise to set up my tarptent. Giant rocks were a godsend in this situation. Around 10pm, a tremendous boom shook the sky, not a cloud in sight. Sounded like thunder, but was more punctuated. I am assuming it was from a bombing range further South. Who knows. Whatever it was the dog was so freaked out that she cried and tried to get into the tent. Surprisingly warm, quiet night. Woke up with the sun and hiked the 9 miles back to the car, taking a more Northerly route out of the mountains. Fantastic morning walk. Dog got caught up in some evil cholla on the way through a deep wash and some impromptu surgery was in order. Mouth full of spines, blood, saliva, green cholla pulp, sad dog. Full extraction would have to wait until this evening. Made it back to the car around noon. Short backpack, but rejuvenating for the soul. |
