The hike is a nice one, but it's a real tough challenge when cold high winds are blowing up against you. The ridge over from the shack was a nightmare of flurries, icy wind, and more cold wind. How did I ever do Humphrey? Well, I did bring gear for that, and I was a little more use to cold.
The views in this area are different, and nice, and make me want to explore some other peaks besides the Needle and Organ Peak. The bald Rhyolite peaks look like they may be a fun scramble. Also, the area south of Filmore has real patches of forest. Yes, most of the range is still a dry brush land, but there are a few sections that suggest it can be moist here, from time to time.
The hike seems to be a little longer than the Needle, and slightly harder, except that I didn't get a natural feel for it since it was so miserably cold. I seem to recall the cold, but not wind, last year in Colorado on my few trips, so I haven't had cold and wind like that since 2011 on Humphrey. I don't miss it, but I had many more layers and protective head gear for that. Oh, how I have softened. 100 is so much more pleasant. Seriously, it was really cold and windy. |
