| no partners | | Parked at the Grassland cul-de-sac. One other car. This hiker was coming out as I was going in. The route to the right looked liked a construction road, I went left. Wrong. Hiked back to the right across the top of the dyke so my mileage is a little longer than others show on this hike. It was beautiful today - the temperature was warm but a slight breeze made it feel cooler and the Saguaros were blooming. It's always a special, spiritual moment in the Sonoran Desert when the Saguaros bloom. http://hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=27087
As others have said, the first 3.5 miles is a rather mundane hike along a jeep road. Then it gets interesting. You start up on the trail, then you hit the first section of pavement. It's like a jab to the midsection to make sure you have what it takes to hike this trail. Then you are back on trail. Then you hit the next section of pavement. It's steeper. It's like an uppercut to the midsection. Then some more trail to the saddle and a little beyond. Then the last section of pavement. It is STEEEP. It's like a combination of punches to the solar plexus. Great test of cardio conditioning. No mercy here and no room for excuses. http://hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=27092
Quite a few gnats today, but a slight breeze kept them from being too much of a bother. I wish I had brought bug repellant.
3.5 hours total. To the top in a little under 2 hours. Snack & photos at the top. Back to the trailhead in 1.5 hours. |
