I wanted to try this hike but didn't have a lot of information on where to stay and how long the drive was etc. I threw this out to Boone and he happened to have a campsite reserved at Big Bear Lake for the weekend. Boone acquired the needed permits and we ended up with 4 hikers able to attempt the trail. The drive from the east valley takes close to 6 hours as you need to drive to Redlands, CA before going north to the San Gorgonio Wilderness. We drove out Saturday morning and camped at the Serrano campground in Bear Lake. This is 60 plus miles from the trail but with the lake, restaurants and stores nearby it is a great place to camp. Saturday afternoon we drove around the Big Bear Lake area, checked out the sites and ate. Sunday morning we got up at 5am, had breakfast, broke camp and drove out to the trail. The dirt road up to the Fish Creek trail is well graded for the most part but 4wd would be needed if the road was wet. The hikes started at 6:48a and it was already warm. The trail is easy to follow and the graded is similar in grade, elevation and distance of the weatherford trail ascending Mt Humphreys. We made good time on the way up and were at the summit in about 3.5 hours. The summit was windy and about 50 degrees so much cooler than the rest of the trail, After taking photos and snacking we started back down the trail. A short time later someone noticed smoke a few canyons over. WE later found out this was the beginning of the Hathaway Canyon fire. The wind was blowing in our direction and we hiked down in the smokey air for about 50%of the hike down. This is a very scenic area with great views. Fortunately we got our photos on the way up before the smoke filled the air. Thanks to Boone for planning this hike.
