| no partners | | 01/25/02 I hiked up to the pools in La Barge Box today. I started in La Barge Creek where it meets Canyon Lake. This part of the creek is narrower and more choked with reeds and cottonwoods than the area south of the Boulder Trail crossing up to the pools. About 45 minutes into La Barge Creek, keep you eyes open for a large bird nest up on the east side of the canyon about 50 feet up. You can't see the nest because of the rocks, but you wont miss the pile of bird poop 15 feet long and six inches deep. That nest has to have been there for years. About 45 minutes past the Boulder Canyon Trail crossing, there is a small cave with one piece of interesting graffiti above the entrance. It looks Spanish, but I doubt it is that old. There looks to be an old mine at the south end of Geronimo Head. The tailings are very visible, but I didn't have time to check the mine out, maybe next trip in. From the Canyon Lake Trailhead, down to La Barge Creek, down to the pools in the box took me 3 hours. This includes dilly-dallying with a new camera, studying large piles of bird poop and enjoying the scenery. |
