That I walked it in the centennial year of the canal's construction was an added attraction for me. I didn't expect much on this segment, and I wasn't disappointed. Not an eyesore, but if you're looking for beauty, forget it. Counted only five bikers on a late Friday afternoon. Surely the weekends will draw more. Just a walk through a modest residential area, houses benind walls, apartment complexes and a few shoddy businesses.
South of Thomas I came across three anglers by the pedestrian bridge. One said he was fishing for largemouth bass. "Really?" "Yeah, up to two pounds," he said. Also ran into two men decked out in casual military uniforms. One was pushing a mileage-counting wheel. "Hello, sir," he said. "How's it going?" I asked. "Living the dream." We both know the data he was gathering will likely wind up in a dark corner of the etherworld, never to be retrieved. Just keep the troops busy, make the captain happy. The best segment of the Crosscut turned out as I suspected, along the banks at Papago Park. Will try to do a route and description soon. |
