I came hear for an afternoon exploratory trip while helping out on a deer hunt with friends and family south of Williams. It was only about 40 minutes from our camp. This is truly a special place. I'm so hooked. I spent the entire afternoon down there. I just didn't want to leave. The Verde River literally starts about 1.5 miles upstream. I had no idea. The water is beautifully clear and running with amazing flow. It's just an incredible river valley to experience in person. Surprising amount of Indian history also... In one hike, I stumbled onto one full ruin site above the river and found pottery on an open dirt slope just laying out in the open. Primary ruin sites are on the south side (see Google Earth). This is also a great place for birding and wildlife viewing. Bass were swimming in the pools. Lots of beaver activity along the river. Dams and lodges all along the river. It's just a great place to hang out and relax. It's everything you could ever ask for if you're in to this kind of stuff. I can't wait to come back in the early summer and spend more time exploring downstream. I'm bringing my rod next time. Those bass were calling my name.

Autumn Foliage Observation Moderate Fall color was just about done for the most part. Most of the cottonwoods have been blown out from wind. Some leaves remaining. One particular unknown tree was prime with wonderful rust colored leaves. Still really beautiful overall. |
