| no partners | | Had wanted to visit this site for some time. Having a few days off and wanting to concentrate on some good hikes provided the opportunity. Fair weather and an offer of guide services by good friends who had been here once before sealed the deal. The wife even wanted to go along.
We met near the marina and headed out. This hike begins easy but that is just to sucker you in. It gets more difficult but remains fun.
The hike was punctuated by wild burros, a big bunch of javelina, three different tarantulas (named Terry, Tony and Taniqua by unnamed members of the expedition). Our legs were often punctured by the abundant cholla. While the trailhead and objective are pretty much at the same elevation, there is a lot of up and down on loose rock. We made slow but steady progress.
Found the crash site easily enough. There is even a geocache here. Had that in hand quickly (thanks Steph). Explored the area and had a nice lunch.
Said a little quiet prayer for Lt. Luhr. About 26 years ago I was 4 seconds from dying while trying to land a crippled F-16. Technology had changed a little since Luhr crashed the Texan here in '44. The ACES-II ejection seat got me out of my problem with just a sprained ankle and a good story for the bar in years to come.
Hiked out and enjoyed some refreshments back at the vehicles. The whole team did great on this one. Another enjoyable day in the Arizona desert. |
