The trail to the cave is located with a large cairn as you get closer to the mountain. Continue straight toward Monument Canyon about another 1/4 mile and you will find an old chimney still standing from an old cabin that the propectors had at this site-a great overnight area. We continued up into Monument Canyon encouraged by some cairns. Using binoculars, looking for remnants of a reported small plane which is in this canyon somewhere I located some tailings a considerable way up the canyon. Nice flat groomed tailings and there was a firepit built on the tailings. I made my way up to those tailings, at this point bushwhacking all the way(stay on left side of wash and work your way up left bank when possible.) A nice surprise awaits. A nice-neat mine shaft horizontally into the mountain. Walk in-goes about 80 feet. Bring a flashlight. I then continued a short way up Monument Canyon, found a huge high rock and sat on that perch for quite a while-scanning the vast canyon for any sight of the airplane which is reported to have been here for years. Not located this trip. I will submit some pictures and a route. Anyone with GPS location of the plane, please PM. A great day in an area not overvisited and thick with Saguaro. |
