| no partners | | I wanted to test Joe’s new APP, HAZ Tracks. I also wanted to test my ability to use it correctly.
So I gathered up my iPhone 5s (with HAZ Tracks), my trusty GPS, my camera (that geocodes) and hopped in my ski boat, and went for a 10 mile boat ride, around the shoreline of the lake.
In the summer, I live on a lake in Wisconsin. The property has been in my family since 1925, and it’s been a great place to spend summers.
The lake is really 3 lakes and a large bay, all connected via channels. The total ‘shoreline’ is about 16 miles long, including many miles of nice, healthy water lilies, cattails, indigenous weeds etc in wetlands areas. There are ‘paths’ thru most of the wetlands, but I didn’t include those on this test boat ride. Also, I mostly stayed outside the “Slow-No-Wake” zone that hugs the shore. Bottom line, that makes this shoreline ride about 10 miles long.
I’ve been around these lakes literally thousands of times, but this is the first time testing electronic equipment. I know that cameras that ‘geocode’ don’t update fast enough when moving along at a fast clip, in a boat or otherwise. All my photos are geocoded ‘on-the-lake’ but many are misplaced. No big deal, as I expected that.
The GPS receiver tracking worked great as usual. In the summer, I use the GPS mostly as a very accurate speedometer while waterskiing. This time, I was using it to compare it’s ‘hike-track’ with HAZ Tracks ‘track’.
HAZ Tracks worked great also. The HAZ Tracks' track matched up with the GPS track nicely. Exporting to Route MGR & posting went very smooth also, and Joe’s video tutorial on this whole process is worth a look.
HAZ Tracks is going to be a very worthy tool in my electronic toolbox.
Congrats to Joe.
Looking at the track on Route MGR ‘Satellite view’, with the present Google satellite imagery is interesting, as it depicts the lake mostly covered in ice.
Obviously not so in August, with the air temp 85 degrees and water temp 80 degrees.
The photoset is mostly just a sight-seeing tour of my shoreline boat ride.
I’ll have to find a permanent ‘mount’ for my iPhone 5s if I use it in the boat often. Just wedging it between the windscreen & dashboard won’t do, while bouncing over waves. |
