| no partners | | I originally planned this as the last of three climbs today but when I realized I would only have shade if I did it first (and the other two would have no shade anyway) I figured I'd knock it out first.
After a glance from the US 60 a few months ago along with Topo maps and Satellite, I had drawn a route curving around the 'back' of Chrome Butte. But once I was about to tackle the ascent I decided to try my luck going pretty much straight up, hoping to find a route through the vegetation between the craggy rocks. Good thing I did because it worked out and later form above, the route I had mapped out didn't look good.
The border between the San Carlos Reservation and Tonto NF runs right across the summit of Chrome Butte so in my wandering around I crossed through the barbed wire fence a number of times... which meant removing my pack each time.
Due to a reasonably flat summit along with trees and brush it took a bit of wandering to get the best views. But well worth it.
I began with 74° & 75% humidity (a by-product of heavy overnight rain) and ended with 82° and probably around 50% humidity so I got another soaking.
Only 45 photos so I will probably post them all in the photoset on HAZ. (Takes too long to pick out the 'best' of the bunch)

It's now part of FR584 but some maps refer to it as 'Hunting Road' which is a pretty accurate representation. Put it this way... JJ won't be driving his Jeep on it any time soon. |
