Comparing previous hydrographs for Winslow and Cameron I decided the crest would take about 20 hours to reach the falls so that made it noon on Feb 1. Rain events create a very rapid rise and fall on the Little Colorado this time of year so you have to be on time at the Falls. By the looks of the flow and the water marks on the rocks we were pretty close, maybe a couple of hours late.
We left I-40 at Winona, drove thru town and turned on Leupp road. This road is paved and in great shape. Just past milepost 5 we turned north on unmarked and unpaved 6910. (There is a sign just up the road from the pavement). It was a bit wash board but in good condition. Just before you get to the falls a trail goes to the left and a muddy parking area. A short walk takes you to the falls view. There is a concrete drive above the falls to cross the river, please don’t try it with high water. You could park at the crossing and walk the bank to the Falls. |
