The area is just south of Red Picacho Mountain in the Hieroglyphic Mountains.
When planning this hike, I noticed I could park 3 tenths of a mile from my initial hike destination. (The destination being a benchmark and a county boundary marker). Since the drive was over 70 miles one-way, I had to do more distance than that, so I set up a loose plan to do a little peak bagging (more like “bump bagging”), and desert wandering. The hike turned out to be alot of fun.
The first thing was to locate SELIN benchmark and county boundary marker #16. If you locate one, you have the other also, as they are literally 3 feet from each other. Both markers are in great shape. A summit log was on this ‘Benchmark Mntn' also.
The name ‘Selin’ is from a once nearby ranch, back in 1924. There are so many gravel mines around this area I suspect the ranch was sold to ‘gravel diggers’. One of the mountains I climbed is half gone from a gravel mine’s excavation. The half I climbed will be gone in a few years I suppose.
During my hike wandering, I saw (and heard) many wild burros, but only got a couple photos of one solo burro. I also spotted 3 mule deer, and alot of jack rabbits. (No photos though - They’re too quick). You gotta love those huge ears on both animals.
The little bit of rain we had last week, kept the dust down and kept the footing very good, especially climbing some of the little bumps in the area. There was just enough moisture left in the desert to give my boots a grip.
All in all - A good day and a good ‘wander’. |
