Some frost, some ice, some Autumn color

Last Sunday as we hiked Little Four Peaks, I noticed some of the trees down in First Water Creek were in color. I had a meeting scheduled for today that was called off, so as a spur-of-the-moment, I decided to check out the Willows and Cottonwoods around Hackberry Spring.

It was darn chilly when I left the house and even chillier as I arrived at the Horse Lot along First Water Road, but only a slight breeze stirred the air so I headed out. The trail follows a narrow canyon that keeps the sun out and protects you from the breeze so many of the plants had a layer of frost still on them at 8:30 am. All the small pools along the route had water in them thanks to the rains of this past Monday and a thin layer of ice on top thanks to the low temps.

As I rounded the final bends in the wash entering the Springs area, some of the taller trees were shedding their yellow leaves while some of the more protected trees maintained their colorful foliage. The low growing brush has some color but mostly green, although the frosty mornings should change that real soon.

On my return, the sun had risen high enough to light up the shady areas and melt the ice from the pools, while the frost on the leaves had now turned into droplets of water. I returned to my truck and it was still the only vehicle in the lot... I guess not too many people wanted to brave the chill to enjoy the fresh air.
