Today I joined a great group of folks from the Baja Hiking meetup group for a trip up Cat Mountain. What a fun little scramble type of bushwhack this is! For some reason I thought there would be tons of loose footing [and a lot more brush]; but most of the ascent portion – at least the way we went – was scrambling / boulder-hopping the whole way [=my favorite!]. There was almost no brush… however the way we went down had tons of jumping cactus / jumping cactus balls to maneuver around. Despite tired legs from my trek to Rattlesnake Peak the previous day, I managed to come clean off the mountain without a single cholla encounter. A few others in our group were not as lucky, but fortunately no one took any direct hits as far as I recall.

After descending Cat Mountain, we picked up a trail that looped around the mountain's base and headed back toward the parking area. Partway back, a few of us decided to do Little Cat Mountain as well. As beat as I felt at that point, I was pleasantly surprised at just how fast/easy Little Cat was. Aside from a steep section that had a few loose rocks in the beginning, most of the way was nice solid rock with almost no brush. While I had more fun ascending Cat Mountain, I thought the views were better [and much more interesting] from Little Cat.

Originally we were planning to take a trail off Little Cat, circle the base of the mountain, and then head back to our cars. Instead, very shortly after leaving the highpoint, two members of our group spotted a route that headed down a very steep section with loose footing, which would cut off a lot of distance. As terrible as I am on loose footing, I was beat and thankful for such a direct way off the mountain. Like with Cat Mountain, the descent off Little Cat also involved a bit of maneuvering around jumping cactus / jumping cactus balls… but on a much steeper slope with far looser footing. Once again, I somehow managed to come clean off the mountain without a single cholla encounter.
