| no partners | | I parked where Bloody Basin Road crosses Bishop Creek, trading off a long rough drive for a bit more walking. BTW, BB Road has had recent maintenance - some of the rocky sections between the ranch and the mesa top have almost disappeared!
I walked down the creek and up Hackberry Wash - new ground for me. I was surprised to see stone walls, apparently built by ranchers, both near the bottom of Bishop Creek, and in a long stretch on the eastern edge of Hackberry Wash. The wall must be pretty old - they're far from continuous and wouldn't keep cows out of the wash today.
I ran into a heavily decorated cliff face in the wash - unfortunately a bit faded and sloppy but nice to see. I continued out on to the flats south of New Windmill and passed a small single room ruin (pottery and a rock pile) and eventually found a nice petroglyph site I'd heard about. The glyphs here were impressive and it's unusual to find a concentration like that on small rocks in the middle of the flats.
I headed up the hill to the west of the windmill passing a lot of peckable basalt. I saw a few pottery concentrations but no more glyphs til I found a few at the top.
Coming down to the east I passed a larger ruin (several rooms) which had stacked walls, pottery, bedrock metates, and some small petroglyphs.
From there it was downhill and I took the drainage from the windmill down to Bishop Creek and back to the car. I ran into a few backpackers in Bishop Creek - sheesh - Perry Mesa is getting crowded! |
