| no partners | | I'm glad I skipped Baldy, as I had this on my list for quite a while, and it was at least 2 hours less driving each way, too. Plus, there is that Cedar Fire, and my expectation is that the smoke would kill a lot of the views from Baldy. I have had at least one unofficial report of it being very smokey in the White Mountains.
About what I remember from my last time doing this hike, and it's various pieces. Pretty nice, and the lower aspen sections as well as the upper alpine are the nicest sections. Remarkably crowded for mid-week, but I had the summit alone for a brief period of time. Weather ended up being excellent, and the clouds added little more than ambience, but the distance views, especially in the northern 3rd, were minimal. It won't be until October, I expect, before that returns. Still, it can be very nice on a clearer monsoon day. It is still spring, however, as the birds were very active for most of the hike.
My IT band/ hips are hurting a little from the hike, as it is now a longer hike than I have been doing in quite a while, and I have done next to nothing the last 2 weeks. This is a bit longer on miles than I recall, and prefer, but still it was better than a long Baldy Loop with as lazy as I have been. Never steep, but longer miles. Looks like I haven't really been as good at staying in hiking shape in town, as I want to be. I'll blame the heat. Yeah.
This was #98, and as recently as early last week, I didn't expect to be back so soon. I might be back for #99 next week, but might not, too, as there are other hikes about and I still have until September 8th to make 100 summits in 10 years. If you subtract the 20 months I lived in New Mexico, I have even more time. |
