This one had been on the list since I found out it was a high point, but for various reasons I have just never got around to doing it. Part of the reason was that I was not even sure which route I would take there, or whether I just wanted to drive to the edge of rim and just walk out to it. The latter seemed a little cheap, so I went with the big loop option most recently completed by @fricknaley, but I think created by the @eagle.

I started around seven to one car in the Horton TH which is a rarity, but it was a Wednesday morning so I did not expect the usual big crowds. Quick hike into the springs and then the Highline to Promontory Trail. The Highline is a little up and down to the Promontory turn-off, but I liked it and the trail seems to be in pretty good shape. Promontory Trail was more rugged than I thought it would be and pretty steep, but I kind of liked the aggressive little trail. I am not really sure if there is a trail that I missed on the rim, but I kind of just went towards the highpoint with a few glances at route to see if I was missing something. I just never really found anything I would call a trail, some sections of road and cairns, but they seemed too far away from track. I don't know maybe I was just off today. The high point was very cool and I spent a good time taking in the views, testing the 3G and thinking about where my summer went, as the party is over, back to work tomorrow, no kids yet, but back to work...sigh.

There were some nice periods of cloud cover today, but it was also a little warm at times. I decided on an out and back at the high point, rather than the big loop. I was probably being a little paranoid, but I thought it was a tad warm and did not want to drag Blanco, or maybe I simply did not want to drag myself across the Highline late in the afternoon. Either way I was fine with the shorter option.

In the end, A great first hike back in Arizona. I forgot how much I like the Beeline drive early in the morning and while I miss Colorado, I have a lot to still do and see in this great state, for example, finishing up that county high points list....10 down :)
