In the spring before the weather got too hot, I did some hiking in this area on the western side, off of King's Ranch Road. I had a map of the western half of this trail system, but I soon discovered more trails that headed further east to Peralta Road. CannondaleKid noticed my triplogs at that time and was gracious enough to send me his mapped out tracks of the rest of those trails. They downloaded in RouteScout seamlessly and gave me a nice digital map of the area. CannondaleKid also split the tracks for each trail and added waypoints at each junction, which RouteScout then gives auditory warnings when you approach each junction.
We slept in a bit and got a kind of a late start. The original plan was to park at the Carney Springs TH and enter the trail system off of the Lost Goldmine Trail. by the time we got there, the entire lot was filled and cars were parked several yards up and down Peralta Road. I decided to drive back southbound on Peralta Road to where some old jeep roads lead to the trails. It was a bit tricky at first finding the road and making a steep wash crossing, but after that it was great. The entire trail system was almost deserted the entire time. This seemed to be rather nice because after seeing how packed the Carney Springs lot was, I expected hikers and bikers galore. One of the only people we saw the entire time was in fact CannondaleKid himself. We caught up briefly on things and I thanked him very much for the tracks, which was making our hike very easy to negotiate.
Our hike was basically a big loop, taking the Outer Limits Trail to the Transition Trail, then eastbound on the Lost Goldmine Trail and south again on the Don't Fence Me In Trail, then back to the car. I expected cooler weather and we packed sweatshirts, but no one needed them. By the end, it was even a tad bit toasty, but still extremely comfortable weather the entire time. Looking forward to going back to doing at least one more hike in this area to finish off these trails and get them all mapped out in my computer. |
