| no partners | | With the recent death of the "Grand One" Saguaro out by Horseshoe Dam from its injuries in the Cave Creek Complex Fire, I'm taking some friends to see the big 50-in-1 Saguaro by Labarge Springs. So I figured I better run out there and scout it. Carlson & Stewart describe a "Bluff Spring Loop" on page 55 of their "Hiker's Guide to the Superstitions". This is basically that loop - clockwise - with a side excursion. Joe describes a Bluff Spring Weavers Needle loop hike. This is a wimpy little brother to Joe's hike. I left Peralta trailhead and headed out on the Bluff Springs Trail. I always have problems just north of the Bluff Springs campsite area and this time was no exception. Even though my GPS showed I was on trail, I was about 10 feet west. Backtracked and stepped deliberately and found the trail. Kept on trail and visited the Saguaro. On to Labarge Springs and lunch. Came back to Bluff Springs and took the Lost Dutchman trail in. Last year when I hiked this trail on a Red Tanks/Whiskey Springs Loop, I had a bad inflammation in my knee that made it one of the most painful hikes I have ever hiked. I cursed this trail and hated it. I would take three steps and experience the most painful shooting pain I've ever known. I feared that I might never hike again. Today I figured I would hike this trail and truly savor it. Beautiful weather, great company and a great hike. I wander all over the place taking photos so your mileage will definitely be different than my mileage. This is the mileage & AEG from my Garmin 60Csx (and I'm sticking to it). |
