But we took the harder way and started at the Lower Rhyolite Canyon Trail at the visitor center and made our way up from there. The climb was only steep along the last section of the Sarah Deming Trail, but it was a steady climb the entire way up. It was a challenge for Radmila and the kids, but they took their time and made it through.
the Heart of Rocks loop itself has a lot of climbing up and down the rocks. The trails all through here have been very well constructed and it's very apparent that a lot of work has been put into them. Lots of staircases have been put in, which does make it easier to get up and down the hills. Some sections along the Sarah Deming Trail had some serious retaining walls keeping them up.
With about 1.5 miles left, we could hear some thunder and noticed some breezes blowing in from monsoon activity. the breezes were welcome but the distant thunder wasn't. We got back to the car without incident, but later on we noticed that the storm activity around Willcox looks like it definitely hit where we were hiking. |
