From Kite Lake trailhead, you encounter Mount Cameron on the way to Lincoln, which is about half mile further. However, there is a 200+ feet drop to the saddle connecting the two, which means a total of about 450 feet of additional ascent involved in reaching Lincoln. This being my first time in a year being over 12,000 feet, my late start, associated threatening clouds, and the fact that I was really sucking wind, I called it a good day and headed down after eating lunch. Cameron is 14,293 feet according to Wikipedia and is considered an "easy" 14er, but still a challenge because of the elevation.
Fantastic views in every direction, including Quandary to the north, and the Collegiates to the west, and the nearby Democrat and Bross. Many people do all four in one day, but it's a full day and you need a favorable weather forecast. Pretty nice, but rough toward the end, drive in from Alma to Kite Lake; I saw a few sedans in the parking lot. High clearance vehicle is a plus. Several people on this Monday, but not croweded. |

Wildflowers Observation Light Best flowers are along the drive end near the top. Should be better after the rain yesterday afternoon. Good columbines and paintbrush. |
