| no partners | | Decided to attempt a winter ascent up Bill Williams, and to try out some new equipment. Got to the trailhead around 9:30 and put the snowshoes on. After having to stop several times during the first two miles to take on/off snowshoes, and remove layers, finally started making good time. Managed to hit the road up to the lookout tower at 3.5 hours (which happened to be our turn-around time). Ditched the snowshoes and poles, and walked up the rest of the way. Unfortunately, I said we should go right (down the road) instead of left, don't ask why. Turned a corner and saw that I was wrong, and hiked up a knee-deep snow slope to get back on track. Road was pretty icy the rest of the way up. Finally hit the lookout tower after 3.75 hours.
After a short food/water break, put the crampons on (very good idea) and headed back to the snowshoes. We made pretty good time back until we hit mile marker 2, and definitely hit a wall. For the last mile we took the snowshoes off and crampon'd it in. Pretty good hike, only saw one other person the entire time. |
