This hike is not for the ones who fear heights or have troubles with route finding. The trail only leads you half way, the rest is up to you, route finding skills are necessary over boulders, rock slide, scree, snowfields.
11 hours, 18 miles, 6500 ft, Class III scramble to the top of the peak.
The Matterhorn Peak (12,279 feet) is the highest in the northern Sierra.
To get to the trailhead, take 395 South from Bridgeport to the Twin Lakes. At the end of Twin Lakes Road is Annet's Mono Village, a small RV park and campground with a clear view of Matterhorn Peak, six miles away. |
