The mileage and elevation gain are estimates. Took the tram from the airport and exited at St. Andrews Square from which I started and returned to Waverley train station afterward to take the Airlink bus back to the airport, believe each of those were about 1.5 miles from the car park trailhead so added those distances in. I zigzagged to Holyrood palace and stumbled along to the car park on Queens Drive, locals try to be helpful but are not always accurate. When I arrived I saw hikers ascending up what I assumed was the only path but when I returned I came down another way which they signed as the Main Path. The trail I ascended followed the base of the Salsbury Crags, after gaining maybe 300 feet it leveled off but it would take climbing equipment to ascend the crags from here. I spotted other hikers ascending a steep "stone staircase" path about a third of a mile from there , unfortunately I had to lose about 75% of the elevation already gained before ascending again. This path was steep but not particularly long. Once reaching the top the summit was easily visible a short distance away, lots of other hikers there as it was an unusually clear day.Excellent views of Edinburgh, the castle.the Firth of Forth from the top, nice prominent summit marker. Followed the crowd down the main path to return, the trip up and down back to the car park took 1 hour 20 minutes, ice cream truck doing great business at the bottom. |
