| no partners | | My friend Zac and I followed the trail for a while, but ended up trying to get to some of the caves just off the side of the trail. We arrived at the caves and were somewhat dissapointed to find they were not really caves...just looked like them from a distance. However, we came across a pleasant surprise, one that made up for the disappointment. We found the Lost Gold Mine! After walking in as far as limited sunlight would permit, we decided to return to town to buy some flashlights to explore the tunnel. Upon our return, we did. And we found that it goes back probably a good quarter mile into the mountain. Then it takes a sharp turn right into the heart of the mountain, and this is where we ran into trouble...bats! Lots of bats! Since breathing too much of their feces (which reaked) is toxic, we decided to leave immediately and booked it on out of the cave. But what an experience. There's also a cleaver little poem grafittied on the walls around and inside the cave, and cleaverly, the end of it is at the end of the tunnel (of course requiring you to go all the way in). And this is what I intend to do next time. |
