After spending a couple of cold days in the Toroweap area, Chumley and I headed to Kanab and treated ourselves to a hotel. Our plan was to hike one of the canyons near Lee’s Ferry but the area received several inches of snow and we scrambled for an alternative. Our hotel had a bunch of hiking informational packets and Wahweap was one of them. Neither of us have heard of this area and we found a few photosets on HAZ and thought this looked like a good option. We decided to go for it and I’m glad we did.

We left Kanab and headed east for Big Water and detoured over to our trailhead and started hiking around 10:30am. It was a very cold morning with clear skies so we were bundled up as we hiked up the creek bed. There is no formal trail. You basically follow the creek bed and there are social trails that cut some of the corners. This part of the hike is kind of boring but we made fast time. The area had a solid blanket of snow and this made for a beautiful hike. After a few miles we started to see hoodoos on the left side of the canyon. And finally we started to see the main attractions around the four mile mark. The hike was boring up until this part but the final half mile is wonderful. The formations are stunning and defy logic. There are a lot of hoodoos. Chumley and I explored the entire area and took a bunch of pics. Seeing the hoodoos in snow was amazing!

After we had our fill, we started our return which went really well. We made fast time and saw a few people about two miles from the trailhead. We continued on and were back to the truck around 1:30pm. From there we loaded up and headed back for Phoenix. This was a great option and I’m glad we spent the time to see it through.
