Tim went with us to the top of the first drop because it’s a 300 ft drop and that big of a rope is not needed for the rest of the canyon. He sent us down the line and then pulled rope and hiked back to the car. We had prearranged a meet late lasted at the visitor center.
Englestead was beautiful! Sculpted by water flow over time. It was dry but shady and cold in the bottom of the canyon. As we headed down canyon, we missed our Canyon Daddy and wished he was with us. I was also thinking about how I typically don’t lead a canyon without someone with as much (or more) experience as me. I was able to turn a rappel into a teaching session. I had Garrison and Jessica tear apart a cairn anchor and rebuild it. Then we discussed the appropriate way to rappel (trying to minimize the jerking of the cairn and backed up with meat).
We made our way down the canyon, figuring out each obstacle as it came upon us.
We took a break when we got to the junction with Orderville. We ate apples and cheese and worked on our Canyoneering edition of ‘I think We Alone Now by Tiffany’. We continued to sing as we hiked.
Orderville had amazing displays of Fall Colors. It was hard to get anywhere very fast. At some point we decided to put on our wetsuits to keep warm - it looked like it would be hard to do the down climbs without getting wet.
We encounter our first people of the day in the lower part of Orderville. such a shock after being alone for most of the day. There were a lot of people in the Narrows as well. It was nice to see more of the Narros than we had the day before.
We managed to get on the bus within an hour of our meeting time. It’s fun getting on the bus with our wetsuits and huge packs. Often the tourists will quiz us where we had been.
We found Tim at the visitor center making friends with some deer! |
