All I had was a pin on google maps, but I didn’t think it was going to be too difficult. Rookie mistake not plugging that pin into route editor... oops The pin was accurate but my maps were going crazy in the canyon, so we ended up the wrong wash then way too high before realizing we were in the wrong side canyon. Alas, we found a few cool dwellings along the way and also accidentally stumbled into the “tree cave.” We relaxed on a shady ledge and had some snacks before making our way back down to the main trail. We found the second wash and started following that a ways, getting closer to the pin. It was slow moving given it was all off trail bushwhacking, in washes, or climbing straight up. It was getting a bit later in the day, and some of the group decided to bail on the search; I didn’t blame them! I had originally planned to stay for sunset to avoid traffic anyway, so Kirstin, Kara, James and I continued on. I had an instinct there could be a path to the right of us, and had James go check it out. We finally found our “trail!” Once we saw the sign about the dwellings, we knew we had finally reached the destination. The “instagram famous” alcove was actually quite unimpressive in my opinion, but the dwellings on the ledge across the way were such a treat! It was really satisfying to finally find the destination and the bonus ruins, and we relaxed and enjoyed the views for a while. Heading back down was way easier and we only lost the trail for a little bit, then easily corrected it. We were back on the main trail shortly after and heading out, finishing as it got close to sunset. Always a great time in boynton, as there is no shortage of fun places to explore! Cruised back to the valley after sunset, and had zero traffic on the 17, which was a nice bonus! |
