Original goal was cave halfway up the cliff. I studied maps and photos for a few weeks and thought I had a passable route. I was wrong.
Parked at Negro tank camping lot.
48 degrees no clouds
Stiff breeze.
Took a jacket in the pack just in case but a long sleeve button down was enough.
2.5 quarts of water and lunch.
10:13 Left truck - to go up the south side of the mtn. Really cool rock formations the first 30 minutes. Lots of bare rock and easy to walk.
10:41 Found a gate… Glad I didn’t have to fence hop. - Saw 4 deer.
10:50 – First small cliff about 10 feet. Lots of hand holds and grippy rock
11:15 – Stopped and decided to not go on because it was just too steep and it looked like the cave was out of reach.
11:19- Stopped to enjoy the view and some water. Views from this point were amazing. Decided to risk it to the top not the cave. Yeah, I chickened out. Live to hike another day.
-
This was the steeper than, well it was steep. A fall would mean going over a few sets of ledges.
11:41 – top - lunch- More amazing view. From here I could seeL
Ramanote Peak
Tumaccori
Elephant Head
Lost dog
Wrightson Observatory
There were some people near the truck. We were looking at each other through Binoculars.
Noon – headed down
12:13 saddle between two peaks
This way down was steep but no cliffs at all. Just sliding rock.
BUT...The way I came up was not going to be the way down.
12:42 back at the gate
1:21 back at truck

Notes:
Took a Beeline up the mtn.
Rested at a point where I wasn’t sure I could go any further. But after a short break it looked less impossible.
The higher I went the better the it was.
Lots of small ledges to climb up and over most between 2-4 feet. The rock got better further up too.
the ridge at the time went back about 40-50 yards more.
-
Took the hillside to the East to the saddle. There is a tree in the middle that can be seen from the truck. This tree was a good reference point.
From the top to the saddle was easy/safe compared to the way up. There was nothing on the hill on the other side of the saddle. There was some really cool cliffs that can only be seen from the saddle.
From the saddle to the gate was steep. There were some animal trails and it was steep but not deadly steep.
-
There is no reason to repeat this one.
The original goal was the cave. It kept cliffing out and couldn’t get there. Don’t care to even try again. |
