We met up around 10am and quickly set up tents at a prime campsite near the trailhead and set out hiking mid day. This actually ended up being a great timing choice since the temps were nice and pleasant at that time and we ran into quite a few groups of people on their exits! I should also note that the road seemed to be in excellent condition- there was only one minor rut but otherwise pretty smooth going. The first couple of miles are uneventful as you do need to hike the road from where it’s closed to the actual trail start. After all the off trail adventures as of late, being on an actual trail felt SO amazing! There was some interesting geology to check out along the way and a little bit of water in some areas of the creek bed. We didn’t really have any water crossings given the dry conditions. There was water in the well though, and it was clear in the areas we saw some small flow. If you’re backpacking, you can definitely find some good water to filter still (more towards the beginning though). I did add water reports while I was hiking but not sure how to find those now. (Thanks joe, found them and synced!) We had the cabin all to ourselves, so that was awesome. We explored around checking out all the old relics. I enjoyed looking through the log book finding familiar names as well. We took some photos and then enjoyed some snacks. We saw someone approaching with her pup and I immediately recognized them as SJ and her dog cricket! That was a fun surprise and cricket really liked my cheese. SJ took off as she didn’t want any chance of hiking in the dark, but we stuck around a little longer, as it was so peaceful and quiet! The hike out was pretty standard and not too difficult. Hiking the road for the second time wasn’t our favorite but still an enjoyable day. We saw one more group headed in to backpack- the poor group couldn’t find parking at the TH and had to hike all the way from the campsite areas. We arrived back at camp prior to sunset and enjoyed a nice {responsible} fire, dinner and some beverages before turning in. It was pretty chilly at night but the fire was amazing and we kept warm with our layers! It was nice to see the cabin, but I probably would not return unless there was a nice flow in the creek to change up the scenery a bit. |
