It's very likely you'll have the river to yourself, while people nearby on the trails and roads are experiencing crowds and traffic. We saw no other boats. We took out at Gold Bar Campground, but I don't recommend this at low water, unless you are able to easily carry your kayak. Although the water has been coming up, it was under 4,000 cfs yesterday, much too low to fill the side channel to the boat ramp at Gold Bar (see satellite GPS route.)
Last time I did this, I took out at Potash (Jackson) Landing, but that's 17 miles, a bit of a slog, what with the upstream breeze. So we opted for the shorter trip, but then had to carry/wheel the boats quite a distance across the sandbar.
It was a gorgeous day, as you can see. Perfect temperature! We enjoyed seeing the climbers on the cliffs at "Wall Street" from the vantage point of the river.
Last time, I saw an otter. This time we saw just the usual herons, plus turkey vultures and ravens. |
