There was a good amount of flow. I was a bit nervous that there would be too much flow but didn't look too bad. First rap wasn't bad - could easily avoid the worst of the flow. Contined down. Super fun with all the flow, but actually a bit chilly in a 3/2 wetsuit. I was very surprised at the big huge pothole pool. Shelley went first to go rig the next drop and it's always been a swimmer, even in dry years. I saw her standing in less then knee deep water. That entire huge pothole had filled in with sand/debris. Anyway, we made it down in good time and were through the technical portion at 11. Took a nice long break and started the rock hop down to Sabino. Took the east fk trail to Palisades. Shelly made a comment - "are you sure you want to do this, we could bail out to prison camp". I thought, I'm used to the heat, how bad could it be? Started up Palisades. It was VERY overgrown. Lots of Velcro and viney stuff to trip you so the going was not easy. It was also in full sun. I started to really slow down. We finally got to where we left the trail in the morning and found shade to take a break. I felt like I really wasn't able to cool down even in the shade. We noticed that nothing was drying(we had soaked ourselves in Sabino before getting on the Palisades trail)...so it was more humid than I expected. I still felt ok so we pushed on...slowly. I was finding that I had to go very slow or I'd get a bit nauseaus, or my head would pound(I was definitely making sure I was hydrated and had electrolytes). The trail leveled off and we had shade for a bit and I started to feel much better. Stopped right before mud spring to fill up on water - I had drank 4+ liters already. After that it got steeper and I started hitting the wall. about .5 miles after mud spring we stopped in the shade for a break and I was feeling pretty awful...super tired, nauseaous and a headache. Shelly took the rope I was carrying at that point(she now had 2x200 footers). I slowly trudged on. The last bit seemed like it took forever. Finally about 10-20 min before we hit the car the sun was going down and we started to get a breeze... by the time we got to the car I felt better. After changing getting ready for the drive down I felt almost good as new again. |
