We started along Spur Cross Trail and followed that along the creek. No water running in the lower area until you get to the wooden sign at Cave Creek Trail #4. Even that was pretty much pools, not so much running. Once we started up #1533 you could hear the creek running.
A number of cockleburs along the SX trail. Same with small toads, some of which were red-spotted toads. No sign of Sonoran mud turtles that Mr. LosDos had sighted once previously.
Made the #1533 loop, there were two gates along the way that Mr. LosDos said weren't there previously. A number of painted lady butterfiles along the way. Also sighted a red velvet ant along the SX trail returning.
The REAL fun didn't begin until we joined the Metate Trail. I consider Mr. LD to be my good-luck charm as far as running into rattlers. He always seems to find them; I never do. He did mention that they tend to come out around 8-9am once the sun's up. About 9:15 we're walking along the Metate with me as the "snake detector" in front, with him about 5' behind me. We're between the Towhee Trail junctions, and I'm walking with my head down. First mistake. Suddenly he shouts "Stop! Back up!" Soon as he spoke I knew what was happening. I literally jumped backwards past him and turned around. There next to a large rock was a 3' Western Diamondback, coiled and ready to strike. Two more steps and I probably wouldn't be writing this. Adrenalin rush executed. Lesson learned: Stay alert. |
