| no partners | | From 38th St I headed west and up and over the far west side of Happy Hour Ridge/1955 Mountain and then up to 1A. On the way I encountered a dad and his sons doing a loop similar to mine. He was kind of leading but not as he couldn't really keep up with the teenagers. We all would pass by each other a few times during the hike.
The three horseshoes: From 1A, I did Irreg C (first shoe) up to the top and back down as I hate going down that 302. I continued on 1A to VOAZ (second shoe) and did the same, hiked it up and over to 302 and back. By this time 1A was all in shade so it was darn nippy. I continued on 1A Perl Charles to complete the third shoe and went straight at The Throne so on the way back I took the upper (west) layer. I had planned to hike back across the whole shoe but since it was in the shade, I decided at The Throne to head south to stay in the sun for my hike back to 38th St.
So I ended up taking part of what is called, the North Phx Preserve Mystery Loop back around the mountain. When I got to the 100 I decided I hadn't been to the 40th St TH for awhile so I took that back instead of heading directly toward 38th St, thus giving me a nice hike of around eight miles.
It was interesting to see some of the quartz areas in the shade as it almost looked like snow with the subtle light (see photos)... or maybe it was because I was chilled from time to time so it felt like snow ; and if so, that's my kind of snow! There were a lot more hikers and bikers than I expected to see on a Sunday afternoon. Some were friendly, some didn't seem as friendly. The trails are in pretty good condition and you can tell where they've laid rock to stabilize? the tread. And, as usual, I saw some other trails that I might like to try in the future.
While I was sitting having my Huck beer, a couple horse back riders passed behind me heading for the Preserve as well as other hikers and bike riders. I guess we're now in holiday mode. Lucky for me now, every week is holiday mode.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
