| no partners | | I decided to head out to the San Carlos Apache Reservation and bag a peak today: the Ash Benchmark (elevation of 6,003 feet and prominence of 1,093 feet). I ran into a ranger while I was out there, so I was glad that I had purchased a permit beforehand!
The Ash Benchmark is a very visible peak in the area, so route finding was not an issue. The hike was mostly through open country through knee high (or higher) grass that hid some lava rocks underneath, so the going was slower than it should have been. The closer I got to the peak, the more plentiful the rock was.
The hike up was steep, but not unreasonably so. There were nice open views along the way, along with 360 degree views at the summit.
I located two reference marks and saw the height of light; however, I did not see the benchmark. I guess that I am not the sleuth that @FLYING_FLIVER is!
This was a nice hike in an area that I like. The hike was short enough that I had time afterward to go check out the roads to some other hikes that I want to do on the reservation. |
