However, this is an amazing route - following ridgelines, small drainages and scaling high canyon walls. Expansive views and amazing rock formations just make this even more fun. Although many areas of this hike were particularly hard hit by the Aspen Fire, life is returning. Manzanitas, oaks and pines are resprouting in all of the areas, and the wildflowers are taking full advantage of the extra sunlight while the trees reestablish themselves. It's a great study on the nature of fire (northern slopes and riparian zones more intact, southern slopes and western exposures hardest hit) and in the way that even the most destructive force can be overcome.
Even though we lost a lot of elevation, it felt fairly gradual because it was so consistent. Do be careful in summer weather, though. The bottom third of this trail completely lacks shade and the ascent can be very, very hot. |
