We rented kayaks and went to Canyon Lake. The Acacia and Palo Verde parking areas were full, so we parked at the Boulder Recreation Site and launched our kayaks there. The sky was overcast, and we fought a fairly brisk wind as we headed north. There were a lot of powerboats, jetskis, and pontoons out, so we stayed close to the shoreline for the most part. Those in our group who had stand-up paddleboards were having some difficulty with the wind and the wakes from all the powerboats. The scenery was amazing, especially with the overcast sky. The water was warm.

We reached Russ Cove, where we got out and stretched our legs. There was some trash at the campsite, so we cleaned it up, then had some snacks and beers. My buddy was walking around just east of the campsite when we all heard a loud rattle. He was wearing flip-flops and had almost stepped on the rattler. He yelled and jumped back, as the rattler started to strike at him, then reversed direction in midair and slithered into the grass. The snake continued to rattle for over a minute afterward. Everyone was a little freaked out after that.

I headed toward the Point Campground Overlook to see the views. There was a well-defined use trail, and it was a very easy walk the entire way. However, it was VERY slow going due to snake concerns. The use trail was very narrow, was surrounded by very tall grass, and passed by numerous rocks and ravines where snakes could be hiding. I obtained a long stick, which I used to tap all of the rocks and to poke around in the grasses approximately 6-8 feet ahead. This paid off, as I flushed out 2 more rattlers on the way to the outlook. It rained for about 5 minutes as I reached the outlook. The views were excellent, especially with the clouds. I headed back, again very carefully, but didn't run into any snakes on the way back. The rest of the group was ready to call it a day. The wind was much calmer on the way back, but some of the powerboats and jetskis were coming in pretty close. We got back to the launch site, picked up the trash that was floating in the water there, and headed home for barbecue and more beers.
