| partners | | Better late than never…finally got around to posting our trip to Bryce Utah. We rented a Recreation.gov cabin Podunk Guard Station in the Dixie National Forest for 4 days. The cabin just happens to be very close to Bryce so we had relatively easy access.
First day we decided on the Riggs Spring Loop. We drove the forest road a couple of miles to the park boundary and then followed the road to the start of Riggs Springs Trail at the Yovimpa Pass campground. Checked out the camp site which was right on the Bryce Rim and would be cool backcountry camp site in warmer termps (it was 20 degrees when we started hiking).
From the rim we dropped down to the forest below and about 2 miles to Riggs Spring. Checked out the spring which wasn’t much and then the group camp site nearby. Surprisingly ran into two people who had hiked in from Skutumpah Road on adjacent BLM land. After chatting a few minutes we continued on the loop to a nice lunch spot below some cliffs.
Finished with lunch we continued about 4 mile traverse on good trail to Rainbow Point. Of course, this was the part of the hike where we would see lots of people since it’s on the park road. Took a couple of tourist shots from the point before getting back on the Riggs Loop continuation. The trail follows a nice section along the top of the rim for about 3 miles before closing the loop back at Yovimpa Pass.
Then retraced our forest road back to the park boundary. Nice loop hike through the more backcountry areas of the park with less of the crowd! |
