This was 2 different hikes on this day to 2 peaks on the Arizona Strip:
1) Poverty Mountain (elevation of 6,791 feet and prominence of 1,011 feet)
2) Wolf Hole Mountain (elevation of 6,416 feet and prominence of 1,256 feet)

The Arizona Strip is the vast expanse of land in NW Arizona that is between and north rim of the Grand Canyon and the Utah-Arizona state line.

Both peaks have a Lilley-MacLeod summit register log dating back to 1995.

Etymology
Poverty Mountain derives its name from nearby Poverty Knoll. The original name of Poverty Knoll was Solitary Butte. It got this name in the 1870's from Frederick Dellenbaugh (a member of John Wesley Powell's Grand Canyon expedition), who noted its dark and lonely appearance. For reasons unknown, Solitary Butte was named Poverty Knoll in the 1920's. The name was also applied to Poverty Mountain.

The Shivwits band of Paiutes called a spring near Wolf Hole Mountain "Shina-Bitz-spits", which translates to Coyote Spring. Powell's party mistranslated "wolf" instead of "coyote", and called it Wolf Hole Spring. The name was also applied to the nearby mountain.

Poverty Mountain
I drove about 50 miles on dirt roads to get to a turn-off on a jeep road that went about 1/2 mile to the summit. It was an easy 4WD road, but after the long drive I decided to park and hike to the summit. It was a cloudy morning with pleasant temperatures and lots of wildflowers along the way, so I did not mind hiking.

There were lots of pinyon pine and juniper on the mountain, which limited the views. It was an easy off-trail hike from the road to the summit.

Wolf Hole Mountain
The last few miles on the drive to this peak are on a very rough and rocky road -- don't even think about driving it without a high clearance 4WD vehicle. The mountain is akin to a mesa, and once on the mesa I got tired of rock crawling and decided to park and start hiking. I hiked on the road for a bit and then went on an easy off-trail hike to the summit. Like Poverty Mountain, there are lots of juniper trees around which limited the views.

Synopsis
I like the Arizona Strip and am glad that I went to both of these peaks. The area is very remote and there are no services out there, so make sure that your vehicle is in good shape before going -- a tow would likely cost over $1,000.

Distance and elevation gain for the 2 hikes is below. Stats above are the sum of the two.
Poverty: 11.8 miles with 1,125 feet of AEG
Wolf Hole: 2.4 miles with 237 feet of AEG

Wildflowers Observation Substantial
There were quite a few wildflowers on both hikes, particularly on the hike to Poverty Mountain.
