| no partners | | | This hike started out both cool and warm simultaneously because of the wind. The primary goal was the Carr Loop #412 on the rim, but I'm just not down with the fossil fuels rule cult or maybe just call me a lazy approacher. Those upper rim, forest bath loops just don't seem like a worthwhile drive, plus why not add some mileage and AEG. Similar to what The_Eagle described in his recent Mogollon hike, I also encountered a black bear, but in See Canyon early Saturday morning. A mile in, at dawn, the black silhouette was foraging within a rotted deadfall. At first, it didn't recognize I was there, then we locked eyes briefly, but fortunately it turned and hightailed up canyon. Of course, following the trail in the same direction I'm wanting to hike. I haven't had many wildlife encounters that get the juices flowing more than encountering a bear solo, eight feet eye-to-eye. Onward, you only live once! Regardless of what people have said about the See Canyon Trail being worked, this is still an obscure route. There are at least ten large deadfalls crumpled across the trail and a lot of overgrowing vegetation. The core part of this canyon seems even more wild than quite a few of Arizona's designated wildernesses. I'm all for multiuse trails, strongly believing each group can coexist. However, there's an Allfails route that lists See Canyon as a mountain bike descent route. Good luck with that! I think this one qualifies, similarly as the MLC in SoMo, in that please carry your bike elsewhere. The General Crook Trail section near the Promontory Lookout Tower has been almost completely destroyed by a recent logging. It is now obscure and difficult to follow in places. At least I thought this was the General Crook Trail, since both Allfails and HAZ route this trail section on different sides of the rim road. It's not a pleasant section to hike anyway, considering the hillbilly side-by-side action relentlessly producing noise and dust from the rim road. No clacking tree frogs yet either. |
