| partners | | It has been a while since I have been hiking. Had open heart surgery to replace a defective valve in mid June and am ready to go on a test run. On our return trip to Tucson we stopped off in Cloudcroft and hiked on the Upper Wills Canyon Trail. As usual Cloudcroft does not disappoint. Beautiful weather with surprisingly very few people.
Started on the upper end of the Upper Wills Canyon Trail where it intersects with forest road 64 with an intension of hiking to the junction with wills Canyon Trail and return via the Hubbell Canyon Trail. I told Ginny there was a 200 foot AEG on this hike but it turned out to be closer to 800, Oops. Downhill the whole way to the junction with Wills Canyon Trail along what was probably an old logging road or rail. We saw railroad spikes and what looked like coal which is why I suspect a train track. Where my GPS said the Hubbell Canyon Trail intersects there was no sign of the trail, well there was a trail that use to split off at a place called Mauldin Spring but it was fenced off with a 8 foot fence. This fence ran for about a half mile along the trail. This area was really plush and green, appears they were fencing the wildlife (and hikers) out. We continued on to the Wills Canyon Trail and returned the way we came. On the return trip we did see the Hubbell Canyon Trail junction but it’s not real obvious. This trail junction is just west of where the 8 foot fence starts. We decided to just continue on back the way we came and do the Hubbell Canyon Trail another day. Great weather the whole hike, probably mid 60’s.
I finished the hike without any issues and it felt good to be back hiking again. I haven’t logged any hikes since April but now that I’m back in Arizona I’m hoping that will change. Miles wise I probably walked more in Lubbock than I do while in Arizona with maybe 90 miles a month but I don’t consider walking 3 miles a day around the neighborhood hiking. Great to be back in Arizona where the highest point is not a freeway overpass. |
