I decided to stay close to home and hike this morning.

I heard a snake rattle as I was going up toward Bell Pass; at first I thought that it was just crotalus hazerus, so I took a couple of more steps. Then I looked ahead and I saw crotalus atrox in the middle of the trail, all coiled up and ready to strike. Going forward I may have to disable nature sounds on RS when hiking in the desert in the summertime!

On the hike back I also saw a gopher snake sunbathing on Thompson Peak Road.

There was a lot of brittlebush; other flowers were buckwheat, fairy duster, staghorn cholla, and prickly pear.
