Jon and I were heading home but decided that getting back to town at 5pm constitutes a wasted weekend, so we looked into some of the Marble Canyon options that have been on my radar for years. Without proper research and sketchy cell service, we opted to hit Rider, which Jon had done as part of a memorable "adventure" more than a decade ago.

It didn't disappoint. The one typically mandatory pool was only calf deep to cross, and despite the strong cold front that even made this one an option in late April, the sun was spring warm so I got to enjoy a couple of refreshing river swims and some tanning time on the beach while the photographer worked some magic up canyon.

Despite the late afternoon visit, we got to see a pair of those silly 150 passenger tourist rafts power through the rapids without so much as a bump. I'd love to see real paddle rafts or kayaks push through this one. I was not expecting what an aggressive little rapid this one is.

After late light photo fun we powered up canyon to the exit ascent, starting just as the sun set. This was actually nice timing as we were treated to a sun-free climb and reached the top just prior to needing artificial light.

After the long dirt drive back to pavement, we rolled back into town in the wee hours. The 89 and 17 are really quite enjoyable roads to drive when the rest of the world is asleep!

Looked gnarly. Flow rate at Lees Ferry running between 8500 and 9500cfs at time of visit/posted photos.

Mostly dry with a few easily navigable pools in the last quarter mile. Did not taste, but heavy mineral deposits where water has evaporated made me question whether it would be drinkable anyway.
