For our last day in Slovenia, our flight didn't leave until after 9pm, so we had pretty much all day to kill after we checked out of the hotel. Ksenja had a list of other must see sites in Slovenia that wouldn't take too long. The Perichnik Waterfall was the best one on the list. I have since seen it on various advertising and social media sites for its photogenic qualities.
I think it was a minor miracle that we were able to get a parking spot exactly across the street from where the trailhead begins for this hike. It's a pretty big tourist attraction and the parking almost everywhere is very limited. We did get a bit of an early start, so that must have helped.
Ksenja had made this sound like a very easy thing to see, not mentioning any walking at all. It is actually very short and easy to hike, but it's also pretty steep, going up a good 400' in less than a half mile. The day after finishing Triglav wasn't the best day to try this. At first I was expecting it to be bad, but I was also kind of surprised that my legs didn't really feel all that sore when I woke that morning.
This waterfall is actually 2 waterfalls, and upper and a lower one. We stopped at the lower one and it empties into a pool, creating a huge mist cloud. From recent experience with waterfalls in WA state last December, I knew that if I got too close to that, my beard (which I straighten with a hair dryer every morning ) would turn into a bird's nest. The weather was partly cloudy, so the sun would break thru every once in while, which made for dramatic differences in how the pictures came out. Radmila checked that out and then we made our way further up the trail to the upper waterfall.
The upper waterfall didn't have the mist spray where it hit the ground, and there was a much bigger area behind it that you could walk back to explore. Off of the cliff on either side of the waterfall water was seeping and dripping constantly. You had to get past that part quickly, and then once you're far enough under the overhang, it was possible to stay dry. Got a few pics of the waterfall from there, but they all have the water dripping in the foreground.
At the top of the lower waterfall, there is a little trail that's been formed by people who must obviously walk over there to risk their lives for that great photo. I decided not be one of those people.
We made our way down the trail (and the steep staircase at the top of the trail) and went off to one more site seeing location before we got lunch and headed to the airport. Very nice way to end the visit to Slovenia. I was actually very impressed with this country much more than I expected to be and would like to make more visits back to explore the Julian Alps, Triglav NP, and various other via ferrata routes. We would take a short break back in Serbia before heading off to Bulgaria for me to tackle another high point. |
