Route Scout Route Recorded  on Route Scout | Pop | Map | Popup | MapDEX
It had been a few weeks since Shawn and I had hiked, this one was an unknown for us, and turned out to be a bit of a workout. We started off from Warpaint TH, and headed left at the first junction onto Thash Kavid (which was showing as Warpaint South on our map)...this already had us off our intended route, but was heading in the right direction so we continued on...RS kept instructing me to calibrate the compass by doing a figure 8 with my phone, I questioned whether this was really a calibration method or just something Joe added to see how many hikers he could get to look silly out there doing figure 8s with their phones. :-k I made multiple attempts but I don't think it worked. (I'll blame this later  )...we eventually merged onto Corona de Loma Trail and headed up the steep switchbacks we had been viewing from a distance for quite awhile.

Once on top, the trail follows the ridgeline a little ways then descends into Eagle Pass, which was quite pretty. Then once again, it's uphill out of the pass until we reached National Trail. We followed National Trail northeast, mild ups and downs, dodging an increased number of mountain bikers as we continued on. As we neared Fat Man's Pass, we looked at our route and realized that we may have missed a turn, although with my "non-calibrated compass" we couldn't quite tell where (again, I tried the figure 8 thing to no avail), we opted to go back a ways and then decided we wanted to be up on Guadalupe Ridge...with a little bushwacking (and minor amount of bloodshed) we made our way up there...the trail along Guadalupe Ridge aka Midlife Crisis is pretty straightforward, until it's not. It goes along, then seemingly stops at a pile of boulders, which require some scrambling/climbing up and over, and then the trail reappears. Once we accepted this was "normal" we had no problem following the trail southwestward.

Eventually, we reached the junction, which we would take southeast, with Old Man Trail. We stopped for an apple break before heading down. Refueling was a good idea, the trail is steep and parts are covered in loose rock...downhill is probably not the preferred direction of travel...my knees were feeling it by the time we got to level ground. We had intended to take the northern section of the Thash Kavid loop trail back to the TH, but we missed the turn (dang non-calibrated compass! : wink : ), so we walked the longer distance all the way back to the Corona de Loma lower west loop leg and returned to the TH on the same trail we started on. Still not breaking any speed records, but our distance is doable, so we'll take it. :D
