Drove to Sycamore Rim Trail and started from the K A Hill TH. I like getting the climbing at the start of this hike. Pomeroy Tank was much more full than when I had hiked here 3 years ago. Saw climbers near Sycamore Falls. Saw an interesting Red Velvet Ant & mountain lion scat. The section that I had bypassed the last time is beautiful with a nice stream and the Historic Sawmill. 11.2 miles 2,476AEG
Checked out Dogtown Lake Campground. Very nice facilities.
Scouted some more trying to find a way to hike the Matterhorn up Granite Wash from the south. Did not have the Topo so weren't very efficient.
Settled on a campsite off of FR108. We were visited by AZ Game & Fish Officer Mike Rice. Very nice talk and some good intel. Temperature dropped into mid-20°s. Winds not nearly as strong as prior night. All equipment performed superbly especially the Western Mountaineering 20° bag. New Thermarest NeoAir and new NEO Fillo both were amazing. Condensate on tents was ice crystals. |
