| partners | | Great hike with tibber (Anglea) to check out the changes to the Fossil Springs area since the dam was removed. Her report has all the details - so I'll leave out the blow-by-blow... As for the comparison with July of last year, I have to say that for someone who mostly just wants some stream time, beautiful vegetation and a shady, fun place to relax, it's still wonderful. If you're looking for rope swings, "cliff" diving and lots of isolated swimming holes, then you'll be disappointed. All of the big pools downstream of the dam have filled in, and several of the ones upstream have been erased by the drop in water level. Erosion of the material deposited behind the dam has created a very different stream course - but it's still beautiful. I imagine in a few years floods and gradual erosion will restore many swimming holes and pools, but for now, the big star is the one near the main camping area. At one point I think there were about 40 people in or around it. Crowded.
We actually saw one group of young people, loaded like pack mules for camping, who walked back to their cars because they were so disappointed. "I can't believe they took out the blinking dam" they said. Like someone took down their personal waterpark... Too bad it didn't turn more back.
The trash was the worst I've ever seen anywhere. Toilet paper, articles of clothing, food cans, fruit shells and cores, you name it, it was ubiquitous. Even found toilet paper and human feces on the trail coming in and in the camping area itself. Disgusting. Don't know if I'll be hurring back there to camp - though I want to explore the creek more below where the road leaves it below the dam. Maybe some pristine beauty can be found in areas that are a little harder to get to... |
