| no partners | | This is a bonus, non-canonical, General Crook Trail segment. The east end of Crook is at (missing) marker V114 at FR 139, just west of Cottonwood Wash. Thus, Cottonwood Trail #508. Basically, you could think of ths hike as V114-V121, and the Connector Trail as V122-V128.
I hiked an extra mile to lay down an accurate current track (per the many signs). It appears there as been some maintenance since topohiker was out here in 2014, though the trail does not seem to get much use.
I saw wild horses in Cottonwood Canyon and near Scrub Point. I was taking flower photos both times, missing action shots. I was not expecting any flowers. Overall, coverage was light, but variety was good.
Other than spot shade in Cottonwood Wash, and the pine grove near the head of Bryant Canyon, there is absolutely no shade. Even the juniper are so small, I had to hunch next to dried out cow flop to eat lunch. At least it wasn’t hot: 71℉, and winds legitimately gusting 30+ mph (per National Weather Service).
Despite not being tremendously exciting, I rather enjoyed this hike.

Wildflowers Observation Light
Besides photographed species, I saw redstem stork's bill, Fendler's desert dandelion, and fleabane (of course). Oh, and some tiny (1/4"?), 4-petalled, cream-colored flower, that was too small and turned out blurry. |
