| no partners | | I got off of work early at 2:30, and was hoping for a year end Graham hike, before Wednesday's storm hit. The wind was calm in Safford, but was raging by the time I reached the top of the Pinalenos. I stepped out of my truck at the Ash Creek Trailhead, and briefly questioned my sanity: 40 degrees, with a 40+ mph wind that sounded like the full force of Mooney Falls blasting through the treetops. So I put on another layer, a wind breaker jacket, gloves, and a warm fleece hat, and headed down Ash Creek, in shorts. Minutes later a blow-down tree interupted the sound of the wind. All was bitterly cold but uneventful until an 80 foot snag came crashing down in front of me in Fraley Park. On top, I signed the register at Webb's summit, picked up my SPOT and gps units which had started to blow away, then headed back on the short segment of the Webb Peak Trail. Driving down, one blown over tree partially blocked the road, while another blocked most of the highway. After successfully bypassing both, I saw 2 deer, a skunk, and a baby fox. |
